Workin' on Fluency!

Today the students had a chance to show off their fluency skills. Each took a section of their current novel and recorded their voice using Audacity. If you are unfamiliar with Audcacity, click here. For ways to use it in the classroom, click here. and here.
The students did a great job reading with expression. In addition, they also were asked to make comments on their classmates' recordings. I know they enjoy listening to one another!
Their recording have been posted on our Kidblog site. Click here to listen.

This week in both science classes we were exploring the physical properties of matter. To go along with that we had a "lab" in which students created Oobleck. If you are unfamiliar with Oobleck, read here. This is a really fun way for students to get engaged...and get their hands dirty.
The funny thing about this substance is that at times it acts like a solid, and others it acts like a liquid. Students also spent time thinking/discussing what other substances might also have similar properties. Needless to say they had a lot of fun.

Matter "Experts"

Our most recent project in science lead the students to become matter "experts". Students were required to research the following terms: compounds, mixtures, atoms, molecules, and elements.
After conducting that research, students were asked to complete a contrast/comparison of the previously mentioned terms. Students were given the freedom to create a poster or multimedia project to show what they had learned. Below are some pictures from a few presentations.
