Physical Properties and Aliens!

Currently we are studying Matter and Energy in science class. Our last chapter revolved around how to identify objects by their physical properties.  Students were asked to gather materials to create a hat that repels aliens.  Two materials that all groups used were aluminum foil and pencils.  The groups then chose two additional materials to add to their hat.  Each group performed tests on the hat materials to find out what physical properties they had.  For example, solubility, ability to bend, and magnetic properties.  It was pretty obvious that the kids had more fun creating the hats than testing the physical properties.

Brainstorming with Edmodo and Ipods

Today we began our unit on Ancient China.  To kick off the unit the students used their Ipod Touches and the Edmodo app in small groups to brainstorm.  The objective was to, as a group, post anything that the students already know about China (past or present).  The live feed then was displayed on the SmartBoard.
The students were really engaged...most likely because they were able to use a piece of technology that they are very familiar with.  However, they came up with many facts about China that were valuable.

In our current unit of Matter and Energy we have been talking about different states of matter.  Today, we explored the phenomenon of oobleck.  If you are unaware of what oobleck is, click here for the recipe.  Also, click here for a cool video.  The mixture at times acts like a solid, and at times like a liquid.
The students were required to record their findings by answering a series of questions and creating a hypothesis. They had a lot of fun mixing the oobleck by hand!
